Disco Elysium’s “lungs are for love” really stuck with me. As a singer I’m aware of my lungs all the time, and now they are a subconscious way we can take in the world. They expand, and fill with the particles of whatever city we inhabit. Everyone’s lungs and their insides look a little different. Harry and Kim’s could be stunted due to their smoking, I think this could be connected to their stunted capacity for love, and how painful it is for the both of them to not only love themselves and other people, but the world around them. Lungs fill up and breath love into ourselves and the world around us. If you are a smoker and had polio, could you not take in enough love?

i actually think it’s so significant that disco elysium is named after an optional side quest. because the heart of the game is in the margins. same way you don’t get the real ending if you don’t do the (let’s face it, sometimes annoying and disincentivised) cryptozoologist quest line. you have to care about the world and its people, not just grinding through the mystery, to ever really understand anything. which is exactly what the game of suzerainty tells you IF you don’t try to “win”

imagine you have been clinically depressed for years but your genius best friend detective partner is even more fucked up so you bond over being suicidal substance abusing workaholics together until your partner starts to spiral so far into alcoholism that he hurts everyone around him, pushes you away, ruins you and your precinct's reputation, but you still keep showing up for him, you're always there to help him out of the gutter, despite the damage it's doing to your mental health and career, despite him failing his promise to do better over and over again for years, until at some point he gives himself brain damage and loses his entire memory. but look! he has a new partner now who he does want to be better for and who he also seems to like way more than you! you show up to check how he's doing after he tells you to fuck off before going on a destructive bender and he does not recognize you, he does not remember a single thing you did for him, it was all for nothing, you are nothing to him now

Every conversation I have with her listening to her foreboding choir music makes me feel like I'm in a cutscene conversation with the Final Boss, except that conversation never ends, and the Final Boss won everything before I was even born, and it couldn't be bothered to show up so it just sent one of it's teeth after me to make small talk, if only to have me recoil before it's pleasing sharpness. I adore talking to her and it makes me feel sick and hollow. why is this game so horribly addicting.

Thinking about two gay characters in Disco Elysium again…while smoker is underground as a part of the homosexual underground, which if that isn’t something Harry made up and is an actual term, then yes they have to be underground to enjoy life to its fullest. Ruby is underground as a fugitive, literally underneath the Feld building, but also the homosexual underground. Ruby’s lesbianism and current predicament are so intertwined to me. Like of course everyone in Martinaise wants to pin the murder on the predatory butch. The mean nasty dyke has to fend for herself, foraging scraps to make machines and smoke cigarettes. Smoker and ruby are at two ends of a distinct neural and physical pathway carved out by identity and ideology that have surely crossed by now. Klaasje even smokes on a balcony. But smoker eventually stays. Ruby and Klaasje don’t. Regardless they are all underground in more ways than one.

i’m discussing harry/kim in a reddit thread rn and people are debating whether we should’ve gotten an option to kiss kim because harry is totally the type to manically fall in love after a few days. but given the nature of the game, it would obviously be a disaster. kim is outraged, you’ve humiliated yourself and all your morale and/or health is lost. that would genuinely be so fucking funny!! local cop goes insane and lives under a bridge because his crush rejected him. or he straight up dies on the spot. one gay kiss and harry is sent to super hell
